What Are Aromatics?
Aromatics are the core constituents derived from plant materials – bark, rind, leaves, stalks, flowers and seeds, through distillation, cold
press and solvent extraction . They are profusely fragrant or aromatic in nature and they offer the gift of naturally healing the body, mind
and spirit of humans and animals. Combined with carrier oils, sea salt, aloe, honey and other bases, their essence is delivered into the
human body through the skin and through inhalation. Through application to the skin, cuts and burns are healed, upset stomachs are
calmed, insects are repelled and emotions are balanced. When inhaled through a warm, aromatic bath,
sleep is encouraged, minds are quieted and muscles relaxed.
Aromatics are the core component of Aromatherapy, a healing art, in which essential oils are used to promote physical healing
and emotional balance. A certified aromatherapist is trained to create synergies (blends of essentials addressing a specific
health or emotional issue) and blend them with carriers for introduction into the body through the skin and lungs. The chemical make
up of each essential oil is unique and by blending the various essential oils based on their individual characteristics, an aromatherapist can
create healing, useful products for a wide range of everyday uses.
There are inhalation blends to address cold and flu symptoms, increase immune response integrity, and treat cuts, bruises, coughs,
varicose veins just to name a few. On a psyche-emotional level, synergies can be created to assist with sleep, relieve depression and
anxiety or energize a sluggish, tired mood.
Practical applications of these blends also include anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral surface cleaners, air fresheners which literally
clean the air of bacteria, viruses and odors. They can be combined with beeswax and coco butter to produce a salve to be rubbed into
joints to relieve arthritis and sore muscles. Migraine headaches can also be treated by inhalation of certain essential oils. The list is
almost endless. It is interesting to note that most medications marketed by large drug companies are synthetic forms of the constituents
found in natural essential oils. So why use something artificial when you can use the real thing?
Aromatherapy is a path healers have taken for thousands of years. It is said that virtually every civilization in recorded history has used
plant materials for healing, cleaning and personal care. At Dragonfly Aromatics™, we hope to share some of this age old practice with you.
